This exposition will bring works together of an era in the past that basically started in the early days in Greece and was at its top at the endings of last Century.

Engraving from Francisco de Goya

From the 23rd of October till the 9th of February 2013 more than forty artists, like Francisco de Goya, Francis Bacon, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Gustav Doré, Leonardo da Vinci and Meret Oppenheim, for example, will be presented at the exposition, showing their look upon the developments of the grotesque, figurative and artistic concern in the critical perspective of understanding the world on itself.

Painting of Francis Bacon

Containing books, paintings, photographs, films, engravings, documents and sculptures, artists from all over Europe will explain in this exhibition the satire, the incongruity, the surprise, the exaggeration and the monstrous and macabre reality of the world.

Meret Oppenheim

The base for The Grotesque Factor is to be found in the philosophical and literary definitions and theories of artists and scientists like Wolfgang Kayser or Mijáilovich Batjin (Михаи́л Миха́йлович Бахти́н).

PICASSO OF MALAGA

FROM 25TH OF JUNE TILL THE 30TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012

PICASSO MUSEUM MALAGA

The exposition “Picasso of Malaga” describes with paintings, from Picasso but also from other artists of the Malaga art scene by that time, the periods Pablo Ruiz Picasso has been staying in the capital of the Costa del Sol, where he was born in 1881, on the 25th of October.

At the age of 10 he left Malaga with his parents to move to North Spain, Galicia, namely La Coruña, where his father was an art teacher. Four years later he moved to Barcelona, to end up in 1904 in Paris.

Since the first day he left Malaga he has been coming back there several times, for the last time in 1901. This must definitely have had impact on his work and that is exactly what this exhibition will try to relate, since Picasso never denied his andalusian origin.

With the selection of the works and paintings Picasso Museum Malaga wants to try to reconstruct the shape, the surface and features of Malaga by that time, with paintings of objects and personages of Picasso’s childhood.

Apart from paintings the exposition will also show documents and objects related to the 19th Centuries society and daily life in an Andalusian city by that time, with Picasso and his family put central in this context.

THE MODERN EUROPEAN POSTER

EXHIBITION PICASSO MUSEUM - MALAGA - SPAIN

From the 18th of June till the 16th of September 2012 Picasso Museum Malaga will bring a tribute to the Modern European Poster, a selection chosen from the most important and exclusive collections in the world.

Man Ray - "Women With Long Hair"

At the European Modern Poster Exhibition the work of some 100 artists will be shown and the idea is to chart the tremendous artistic, ‘advertising’ becoming art and technical evolution, like more modern printing possibilities, of the poster during the 20th Century.

V. Lebedev

The exhibition in the Picasso Museum Malaga contains 3 meaningful and suggestive eras of the illustrious years of watchers. A first part will concentrate on the more Avant-garde side of the art of posters, basically inspired upon the Bauhaus movement, Surrealism and Futurism. Work of artists like Rodchenko, Man Ray and Vladimir Lebedev will be present.

H. Cartier-Bresson - "View from Notre-Dame"

A second part welcomes contemporary artists like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jules Chéret with the more non artistic and aesthetic side of the poster. Definitely Cartier-Bresson is well known for his city-life posters, especially Barcelona and Paris. Both cities are also omnipresent in Pablo Picasso’s life and work.

Jean Carlu - "To All Europe"

The third and last section will focus in the period between the 1st and the 2nd World War, sometimes seen as the most productive period, The Golden Age. Jean Carlu, Bauberger, Colin, Cassandre and Bayer are one of the most significant artists of this era.

A.M. CASSANDRE

- ME MYSELF AND I - IN PICASSO MUSEUM MALAGA

What could be a good reason to mix people like Robert Capa, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn or Richard Avedon in an exhibition? Where’s the relation with Pablo Picasso?

Picasso by Robert Capa

From the 5th of March till the 10th of June 2012 Picasso Museum Malaga offers a ‘foto-biography’ exhibition in which some 40 pictures from the contemporary artists (photographers) as named before will be shown. The philosophy of the exhibition, a “collective portrait”, is to go over the history of photography, which definitely had its high-lights in the 20th century, like Picasso, in relation with the influence of Picasso‘s work.

MeMyselfanI was shown in Cologne, Germany since last September (2011) and will travel to the Museum Für Kunst Und Gewerbe in Hamburg, after the Malaga show. The whole exposition MeMyselfandI, Photo Portraits of Picasso forms part of the “Picasso 20 Looks” programme. The collection of pictures on itself is a thoroughly compilation of portraits of Picasso created by undeniable contemporary artists like Penn, Avedon, Man Ray, Cartier Bresson, etc.

ROBERT CAPA

Born in Hungary in 1913 (+1954), this action photojournalist is most famous for the war photo documentaries he made. He did the World Wars, the Spanish Civil War and the Arab Israeli War of 1948 inter alia.

MAN RAY

Avant-garde photographer, Modernist and big influence in the Surrealism and Dadaism, born in Pennsylvania USA, in 1890 (+1976) but spent most of his artistic carreer in Paris, France. By some people in the world of art sometimes called one of the 25 most important and influential artists of the twentieth century.

HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON

Considered the godfather of Photojournalism born in Chanteloup en Brie, France, in 1908 (+2004), this French photographer was a master in candid photography and cultivator of the real life reportages and street photography.

IRVING PENN

Work of Irving Penn

Basically a fashion (he worked for Vogue magazine for years) and portrait photographer, but also made paintings. American artist born in 1917 (+2009) and definitely the founder of Minimal photography by putting objects just in front of a decorative and simple background like a white or black wall.

RICHARD AVEDON

Born in New York in 1923 (+2004) to a Russian Jewish family, this photographer was considered to be the biggest in defining in his work the image of the United States of America in culture, beauty and style in the second half of last century.

RICHARD PRINCE IN PICASSO MUSEUM

On the 27th of February 2012 (till 27th of May 2012) the Picasso Museum of Malaga will open its doors for a show of the famous contemporary artist Richard Prince. His paintings, collages and pictures will be shown for the first time, a world wide premiere, and the American artist was invited to the Picasso Museum because Richard Prince comes very close to Pablo Picasso’s breathtaking art of eclectic and quiet radical themes, like erotism, desire and sexuality in general.

"Untitled Cowboy"

Richard Prince was born in Panama in 1949 but moved to New York, where he would live and work for 25 years. He made big fame for being the first artist, photographer, selling a photo collage, titled “Untitled Cowboy”, for over 1 million dollar at Christie’s New York in 2005. He started in 1975 and since then he has been for most of the times the centre of polemic, discussion and confusion. Result is that Richard Prince is one of the most followed artists these days in national and international press and definitely inside the contemporary arte scene, as well as among collectors as among galleries and museums.

Another legendary move of this outstanding artist is a photo collage of 1977 made of some pictures he found in the New York Times, where he apart from the usual fuzz he creates with his art work, was the middle of discussions of where drawing the line in the Author’s rights issue.

In 1983 again he ‘moved’ the art world, and American conservatism not for the least, when he created his work “Spiritual America” where a picture of the famous American actress Brooke Shield, 10 years at the time of the picture, was mixed with a picture of the author Garry Gross. On the picture Brooke Shields stands quiet erotically in a bath tub and the artists wanted to elude sexual precocity referring to Alfred Stieglitz’ homonymous picture. Brooke Shields’ mother was definitely not amused with the idea and brought the artist to court accusing him of ‘voyeurism’.

Brooke Shields in "Spiritual America"

Also his “Jokes” series, started in the year 1986, did not miss the hype. In these series he definitely causes the spectator to feel alienated making fun of the American middle class sexual fantasies and frustrations on the most burlesque way.

Anyway, with this very unique exhibition of Richard Prince, the Picasso Museum of Malaga is following the line and philosophy of Pablo Picasso’s face-to-face interpretation of contemporary art. It can absolutely be classified in the category of Martin Kippenberger Meets Pablo Picasso and the Figurative Works of the also outstanding and innovating contemporary artist Bill Viola exhibitions the Picasso Museum has been showing over the last years.

The boys of Manuel Pellegrini, and also ex-Real Madrid, will have to try to keep some points in Málaga if they don’t wan’t to drop down too much in the classification of the BBVA League, losing their aspiration of the Champion’s or Europe League.

On the other side Real Madrid will realize that it could be a difficult displacement to the Capital of the Costa del Sol, and Mourinho, Ronaldo, Benzema and company will also have to go for the victory uniquely if they don’t want to get too much behind to F.C.
