RICHARD PRINCE IN PICASSO MUSEUM

On the 27th of February 2012 (till 27th of May 2012) the Picasso Museum of Malaga will open its doors for a show of the famous contemporary artist Richard Prince. His paintings, collages and pictures will be shown for the first time, a world wide premiere, and the American artist was invited to the Picasso Museum because Richard Prince comes very close to Pablo Picasso’s breathtaking art of eclectic and quiet radical themes, like erotism, desire and sexuality in general.

"Untitled Cowboy"

Richard Prince was born in Panama in 1949 but moved to New York, where he would live and work for 25 years. He made big fame for being the first artist, photographer, selling a photo collage, titled “Untitled Cowboy”, for over 1 million dollar at Christie’s New York in 2005. He started in 1975 and since then he has been for most of the times the centre of polemic, discussion and confusion. Result is that Richard Prince is one of the most followed artists these days in national and international press and definitely inside the contemporary arte scene, as well as among collectors as among galleries and museums.

Another legendary move of this outstanding artist is a photo collage of 1977 made of some pictures he found in the New York Times, where he apart from the usual fuzz he creates with his art work, was the middle of discussions of where drawing the line in the Author’s rights issue.

In 1983 again he ‘moved’ the art world, and American conservatism not for the least, when he created his work “Spiritual America” where a picture of the famous American actress Brooke Shield, 10 years at the time of the picture, was mixed with a picture of the author Garry Gross. On the picture Brooke Shields stands quiet erotically in a bath tub and the artists wanted to elude sexual precocity referring to Alfred Stieglitz’ homonymous picture. Brooke Shields’ mother was definitely not amused with the idea and brought the artist to court accusing him of ‘voyeurism’.

Also his “Jokes” series, started in the year 1986, did not miss the hype. In these series he definitely causes the spectator to feel alienated making fun of the American middle class sexual fantasies and frustrations on the most burlesque way.

Anyway, with this very unique exhibition of Richard Prince, the Picasso Museum of Malaga is following the line and philosophy of Pablo Picasso’s face-to-face interpretation of contemporary art. It can absolutely be classified in the category of Martin Kippenberger Meets Pablo Picasso and the Figurative Works of the also outstanding and innovating contemporary artist Bill Viola exhibitions the Picasso Museum has been showing over the last years.
